Kawaii Beyond
United States | How has kawaii culture traveled beyond Japan to assume unique forms in different locations across the globe? This hour-long documentary from the Kawaii in Japan & Beyond: Theory & Praxis project explores how kawaii culture has been taken up in the local context of Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Archival work included sourcing, rights clearance, and Fair Use determination, plus original capture of public-domain material and location photography.
Research
The Atlanta Voice Archive Project
Digitization of 61,316 pages, 1969-2022. As project lead and Director of Digital Media, I initiated and led the effort to digitize our paper's complete microfiche library. Shortly after HBO's Atlanta's Missing and Murdered: The Lost Children (2020) licensed clippings from the collection.
From Sanborn Maps to Gaussian Splats: Remembering Downtown Atlanta’s Early Chinese Community through Historic Data Visualization and Spatial Storytelling
This archival research presentation explores how historic records and data can be used to create visualizations that help recover, represent, and preserve the history of Atlanta’s early Chinese community, which lived and owned businesses in South Downtown from around 1880 to at least 1945. With very few surviving photographs or architectural records, I built a SOTA workflow that tests how modern creative visualization tools can reimagine historic cultural heritage sites while remaining accountable to archival truth.
